The story of the Michael Dunn Center is rooted in family, advocacy, and vision\u2014and at its heart is the young man whose name continues to inspire thousands: Michael Dunn. Born with Down syndrome in 1965 to Harriett and Mike Dunn, Michael entered the world as a blessing whose life would leave a lasting imprint far beyond his family. His grandfather, C.R. Lay, saw not only the love in Michael\u2019s bright spirit but also the profound need for services and opportunities for children like him in Roane and Morgan Counties. In Michael, C.R. saw potential, promise, and purpose.<\/p>\n

The story of the Michael Dunn Center is rooted in family, advocacy, and vision\u2014and at its heart is the young man whose name continues to inspire thousands: Michael Dunn. Born with Down syndrome in 1965 to Harriett and Mike Dunn, Michael entered the world as a blessing whose life would leave a lasting imprint far beyond his family. His grandfather, C.R. Lay, saw not only the love in Michael\u2019s bright spirit but also the profound need for services and opportunities for children like him in Roane and Morgan Counties. In Michael, C.R. saw potential, promise, and purpose.<\/p>\n

From that vision\u2014and with the advocacy of families, grounded in the idea that every person with developmental disabilities deserves access to education, services, employment and community\u2014the Michael Dunn Center was born in 1971. It began humbly in a church basement, but grew steadily into a pillar of support for individuals with developmental disabilities across East Tennessee. The Center was named after Michael not just as a gesture of love, but as a commitment to ensure every person served is seen, supported, and celebrated.<\/p>\n

Michael didn\u2019t just inspire the creation of the Center\u2014he lived its mission. He received educational services from MDC, and graduated from its school program in 1987. He later found pride in his work, starting his career at McDonald\u2019s<\/em> and later dedicating many years to the field of manufacturing, including time at Caterpillar<\/em> and a remarkable sixteen-year career at Thermo Fisher.<\/em> Known for his dedication, attention to detail, and ever-present smile, Michael fostered strong relationships and deep bonds with his colleagues. He greeted everyone with warmth, often offering a hug, and created a workplace atmosphere of joy and inclusion wherever he went.<\/p>\n

In 1992, Michael married the love of his life, Karen Overbay, who was also supported by MDC. Their marriage was filled with laughter, friendship, and unwavering devotion. Michael called her simply and proudly, “My Wife,” while she lovingly referred to him as “My Husband.” Their bond was strong and pure\u2014an extraordinary partnership built on mutual respect and enduring love. Together, they bought a home in Harriman, and later, another closer to Michael\u2019s family, where they continued building a life of independence with support from MDC and their loved ones.<\/p>\n

Family was Michael\u2019s foundation. He spoke often of his mother Harriett, stepfather Ronnie, his sister Gina and his brother Nathan, who all encouraged his autonomy while remaining a steadfast source of love and strength. With their support\u2014and the support of his community\u2014Michael achieved a life filled with purpose and connection.<\/p>\n

Michael also had a passion for bowling, participating in both local and travel leagues. Confident and competitive, he often playfully guaranteed victory, and more often than not, he delivered. Whether at work, home, or on the lanes, Michael lived fully and joyfully.<\/p>\n
